Nail Polish Review - Essie Summer 2014 Collection - Haute in the Heat

22 July 2014

*Press Sample*

As promised in my last post, I am back from my hiatus. We are right in the middle of summer so I thought why not start with one of my favourite summer collections... essie haute in the heat (press release here)!

Like most essie collections, the summer 2014 collection consists of 6 beautiful shades. This collection is balanced with 2 neutral shades and 4 very bright and summer colours!

Here is a collage of the entire collection... perfect for Instagram and Pinterest!

Overall Comments:
The formula was consistent across the entire collection... creamy, perfect, pigmented and fully opaque in 2 coats. In fact, some have the potential to be one coaters! I must admit, I was a little surprised to see nudes/neutral shades as part of the summer collection but there have been many other spring/summer collections with a variety of neutral shades so I guess this collection is right on trend! On the other hand, I am always delighted to see some brights, especially in the blues, teals, and greens!

urban jungle: irresistible alabaster orchid
Colour: Beige | Finish: Creme | # of Coats: 2-3 | Topcoat: No | Rating: 8/10

Comments: Urban Jungle is an amazing beige creme with a purple/pink undertones (which you can't see too well in my picture below). In my photo I applied 3 coats but you can definitely get away with 2! I was just a little cautious and conscious as I was going to photograph it and didn't want to show any patchiness. It is however, very creamy, smooth and pigmented! I think this would be a perfect base for some nail art!

fierce, no fear: intense cocoa mahogany
Colour: Brown | Finish: Creme | # of Coats: 2 | Topcoat: No | Rating: 7.5/10

Comments: Fierce, No Feat is a creamy shade of brown that reminds me of hot chocolate! Yum! As you can see, it looks a lot chalkier/dustier in the bottle but applies darker on the nail. I loved how thin the formula was... even after 2 coats it didn't feel like I was wearing too much polish but it still gave me that perfect opacity. I only give it a 7.5 because I am not a fan of the actual colour... but that boils down to personal preference. I am still super happy to add a brown shade to my every growing essie collection!

roarrrrange: unstoppable, bold orange
Colour: Orange | Finish: Creme | # of Coats: 2 | Topcoat: No | Rating: 9/10

Comments: Don't you just love the name?! It really makes me want to pick up some black polish and create a beautiful tiger print! This orange creme is just that... ORANGE! The formula is very pigmented, creamy and smooth! Keep in mind that it applies darker and a richer orange on the nails when compared to the bottle. This is a perfect orange creme to add to any polish collection!

haute in the heat: unforgettable hot guava/raspberry
Colour: Raspberry Pink | Finish: Creme | # of Coats: 2 | Topcoat: No | Rating: 8/10

Comments: The collection's namesake is a beatiful raspberry pink even though essie decribes it as a 'hot guava'. In my opinion, it's not a very exciting colour to represent summer or the entire collection. My swatch shows the colour a little warmer than it is... In real life it looks closer to the colour shown in the bottle below. Again, the formula was amazing like the rest of the collection. Definitely, a great pink shade to pick up for those that don't have something similar!

ruffles & feathers: powerful peacock teal
Colour: Teal | Finish: Creme | # of Coats: 2 | Topcoat: No | Rating: 9/10

Comments: I love, love, love this beautiful teal-green shade! It is bright, vibrant and so perfect for summer! The formula was amazing, smooth and very creamy. In the bottle, it looks dusty but in real life it is a very rich colour. My swatch shows it on the greener side but it is definitely a teal (like the colour in the bottle). A must-have for any polish addict! Make sure to wear base coat as this polish stains a little.

strut your stuff: compelling cobalt blue/aqua
Colour: Blue | Finish: Creme | # of Coats: 2 | Topcoat: No | Rating: 10/10

Comments: Saving the best for the last, Strut Your Stuff, is the most gorgeous true blue, aqua polish! This colour reminds of clear blue skies and a perfect summer day by the pool/beach. The formula is amazing and unlike many blues, it did not stain my skin when I removed it!!! Although, I would be cautious and wear base coat just to be 100% sure that it doesn't leave a hint of staining on your nails. I am itching to try some nail art with this shade!

Hope you enjoyed reading my thoughts on this collection.

Although I love every polish in this collection, my top picks are strut your stuff (obviously), ruffles & feathers (obviously) and roarrrrange! Which shades are your favourites?
